Khanom Power Plant Unit 4

Khanom Power Plant Unit 4 is one of the projects under Thailand Power Development Plan 2012-2030 (PDP 2010) Amendment 3. The project was initiated to sustain the constantly increasing demand for electricity and to increase power security in the southern region and the entire nation.

Khanom Power Plant Unit 4 obtained approval of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) from the Office of Natural Resources and Environment Policy on April 5, 2013, and from the Cabinet on June 19, 2012. Khanom Power Plant Unit 4, which began commercial operations on June 19, 2016, has a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply 930 megawatts to EGAT for 25 years.

Location :

Khanom Power Plant Unit 4 was built to replace the previous power plant in Thong Nian Subdistrict, Khanom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Power Plant Type

Khanom Power Plant Unit 4 is a combined cycle gas turbine plant (CCGT) comprising two single shaft combined cycle units. With gross output of 970 megawatt, the power plant uses natural gas as the main source of fuel. Each unit comprises:

  • One gas turbine with 323.33-megawatt production capacity
  • One steam turbine with 161.67-megawatt production capacity

The gas turbines, steam turbine and the generator work together to generate electricity. Heat from natural gas burning in the gas turbine is transmitted through the shaft that is connected to the generator. Emissions from the gas turbine are used to produce steam to drive the steam turbine on the same shaft.

Fuel

Khanom Power Plant Unit 4 uses natural gas from the Gulf of Thailand as the main source of fuel. It requires 180 million cubic feet per day of natural gas with heat value of 820 BTU per cubic feet. The power plant uses diesel oil as the secondary source of energy in emergencies.

In 2020, Khanom Power Plant Unit 4 produced and transmitted 6,515.55 gigawatt hour (million units) to EGAT. Average plant availability is 99.17%.
